In-growing toe nails and surgery

In-growing toe nails and surgery

In-growing toe nails are extremely painful and can be caused by injury, incorrect cutting, ill-fitting footwear or even family genes. If they are left un-treated they can become inflamed and infected and without nail surgery they could re-occur time after time.
Depending on the condition of the nail it can be removed partially or totally. This is done under local anaesthetic, which both Elliot and Sarah are qualified to administer. We apply a chemical called Phenol to the nail bed to prevent the part of the nail removed from re-growing, and therefore greatly reducing the risk of the in-grown nail re-occurring.
The initial assessment will include taking a full medical history and assess your suitability for local anaesthetic. The whole procedure will be fully explained and you will asked to sign a consent form.
After the surgery we will need to see you again to check the progress and re-dress the toe. At this stage we will provide you with a dressing pack and advice you on how to re-dress the toe yourselves.
